Mentee Johanna Gehring
Head of Communications at Roche
Why did you apply to be a mentee?
Being a mentee allows me to grow personally and professionally. I have been very lucky to benefit from local mentorship programmes through GWPR and was very excited also to get the chance of an international mentorship, which is in line with my global career goals and focus. On top of that, we get access to world-class PR experts who share their knowledge with us in masterclasses and as mentees we form a global community.
What are you looking to achieve from this programme?
I would like to grow professionally and personally. This definitely comes with stepping out of the comfort zone. Last year, I moved to Denmark to take a leadership role in a newly formed communications team, and I am certain this won’t be my last move. Having a mentor who has been through changes like this, experienced leadership challenges, and the ability to provide different perspectives is truly helpful. In addition, I am looking forward to getting new skills and insights through the masterclasses.
What’s been your standout moment as a mentee so far?
I am not sure if there is a single moment I would highlight, but what stands out to me is that our connection has grown to a level of personal and professional support. And somehow, we make it work that we get to laugh in every session; I am always looking forward to our meetings, and I truly hope we get to meet in person one day.
Why would you advise others to apply to be a mentee?
Learning from role models and with people who support you beats every book, lecture or class you can take. Empower will make you grow professionally and personally.
How are you using what you have learned as a mentee in your career?
I cannot think of an aspect of my career where I am not applying my learnings and insights. From managing up to building advocacy in the organisation to inspiring my team, every aspect of my career has evolved through my learnings.
